Reflecting on Femanalytica's Inaugural Data Science 101 Workshop

On December 2nd, 2023, FemAnalytica, with support from the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), hosted an introductory workshop on data science at the Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe. This event marked a significant step in our commitment to bring data science skills to Malawians, attracting a group of enthusiastic learners from diverse backgrounds.

The workshop focused on the essentials of data science, including basic programming in Python and the application of data science in promoting sustainable development goals (SDGs). Our goal was to equip a new generation of data scientists with the necessary skills and knowledge for data-driven decision-making, particularly in development efforts aligned with the SDGs.’

A diverse group of Data Scientists and Monitoring and Evaluation Practitioners from various organizations were in attendance, each bringing their unique perspectives to the table. Among them was Saidi Kamphinda, a Data Scientist from Orant Charities Africa, who shared his insights. “Primarily using Excel for data processing at work, I realized its limitations. This workshop opened the door for me to understand Python programming, paving the way for advanced data analysis,” he reflected.

Beyond the formal sessions, the workshop also became a vibrant space for networking and exchanging ideas during breaks. This interaction added to the overall spirit of collaboration and learning.

As the workshop came to a close, the positive feedback and strong interest in further exploring data science were evident. At FemAnalytica, we are dedicated to empowering individuals with data science knowledge and look forward to organizing more such events in the future.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the participants for their active involvement and to MACRA for their crucial financial support.
